Zillow issued a released Friday reporting that both national home values and rents rose in the month of April.  According to the April Zillow Real Estate Market Reports, national home values rose 0.7 percent housing_market_increasein April to a Zillow Home Value Index of $147,300. This is the largest monthly increase in home values since January 2006, and it makes April the second month in a row in which home values climbed up.


Zillow also reported that rents rose from March to April, increasing by 1.6 percent, according to the Zillow Rent Index. Of the 178 markets covered by Zillow, 78 percent experienced a rise in rents.


The Miami-Fort Lauderdale and Phoenix metro areas saw the biggest increases in home values, rising 1.6 and 1.9 percent, respectively. Values

It’s a little more quiet than usual on the Internet this time of year because college students are studying for finals. That means a new crop of graduates is about to flood not just the job market, but the rental market.

So where will the new grads move? compiled this list of the best cities for college graduates based on unemployment rates, mean annual income, cost of living and rental inventory for the metropolitan areas. The unemployment data was taken from March 2012, and it was assigned a double weight for this list since securing a job would be a top priority for graduates.

microsoft_real_estate_400The Seattle area has seen the most growth in technology jobs in the country — significantly more than Silicon Valley.

That’s according to a Forbes/Praxis Strategy Group study that measured employment growth in high-tech industry sectors such as software engineering, data processing and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

The study found that, while the Silicon Valley employs fewer people in the high-tech sector than it did in 2000, the Seattle area has seena 43 percent jump in high-tech employment and 18 percent growth in STEM jobs in the past decade. In just the past two years, the area has seen 12 percent growth in the high-tech sector.

Existing-home sales rose 3.4 percent from March to April with tight supplies in markets like Miami helping to seed the rejuvenation, according to National Association of Realtors data released today.

Year over year, home sales were 10 percent higher in April while median home prices touched $177,400, a 10.1 percent spike from April 2011, the NAR said.

Of course, huge chunks of the housing market will appear sunnier when compared to the soggy early months of 2011 when, in cities like Miami, “things were pretty rotten,” said Rich Green, an agent with Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate in Coral Gables, Fla.

“But, yeah, April was a pretty strong month here,” Green said. In Miami,
