So you've settled in to your home and realizing some privacy would be terrific or maybe you just want to add some flair to your windows that provide you that beautiful view to the outside. It sounds as if blinds or window treatments may be in order.  This can be a critical moment for the future look of your home, so take your time and carefully weigh your options, since they can change the entire look of a room.  When making selections there are a number of aspects you will want to factor in:

  • budget
  • style
  • color
  • material
  • trends
  • convenience
  • safety

I am by no means a specialist, but I have learned over years of working in the Real Estate industry that the window treatments you choose can add value to your home.  They are an investment, so making selections that are timeless while also meeting your other goals is also important.  There are a few approaches you can take when starting your journey to make the "right" decision and most of it comes down to your budget, because there are some very affordable options and there are some very expensive options.

If you are simply lost about what to do and feel like you do not have great "design sense" and have a bit more flexibility with your budget, I would suggest you work with a Full-Service Blind / Window Treatment Designer.  A professional will meet with you at your home, discuss your goals, bring samples and make suggestions as to what would work best for you -- this is a great way to go and you won't have to lift a finger.  Once you make a decision, they will place your order and coordinate the installation, so you will be covered from start to finish.

For those of you who may be a bit more cost-conscious and somewhat handy, don't fret because there are some great options for you!  Many (many) years ago, when I was a young stay-at-home mom and we were more conscientious about how we spent our money, however, I still liked nice things.  I made the discovery of a terrific online company, American Blinds, that sold custom blinds at a discounted price.  To this day, their options are always top-notch name brands and they have a variety of options available.  What it comes down to with this particular company is you will need to:

  • make your own decisions
  • do your own measuring (see my tip below)
  • install on your own

And even though this may sound daunting, I can tell you if you have a good idea of what you want, can operate a tape measure and a electric drill / screwdriver the process is actually pretty easy and can save you thousands of dollars.  Other options, to purchase your own blinds and install would be places like Lowes and Home Depot, but I can assure you American Blinds will most likely still prove a more affordable options.

Our Recommended Cost-Saving Blind Providers

American Blinds

  • Make choices that are timeless
  • Consider options that might assist with your heating bills, such as lined options
  • If you are going with the DIY route, when measuring your windows follow the providers instructions carefully.  I strong encourage you to measure at least three different locations within the frame of your window and use the smallest of the measurements.  Nothing would be worse then ordering inside mount blinds only to discover you can't open and close because your measurement is off!
  • Don't be afraid to go with off brand options, for example the American Blind brands are very well made and are offered for a larger savings.
  • If you can invest in a Window Specialist to help you with the process, go for it!
